How to Write Contents for Your Web Site

So far we have learned how to find profitable niches, doing keywords research, and research our competitors. By now, I hope you have a list of niches and keywords list along with the required data we collected from the previous process. Now, what we need to do is start building contents to our website around the keywords we have on our list.

There are two purposes of the website contents, to give what people are looking for and to supply appropriate data for the search engine spider so it can determine what our website/page is about. So, when creating our content we need to refer to those two purposes. We have to give our visitors what they are looking for, and at the same time we have to make sure the search engine spider can understand what our content is about.

The theory behind creating web content around certain keywords is simple. You take a keyword from the list and use it as your content theme. So let’s say your keyword is ‘natural insomnia treatments’, you will need to create an article around that topic. I believe the longer your article the better it is for your website. However, if you want a kind of ‘minimum limit’, try to create an article with at least 400-500 words.

To please the search engine bot so it will reward you with high rank on the search result, make sure you put your targeted keyword on the article title, on the first paragraph, on the last paragraph, and some where on the middle of your articles. Try to include several related words and synonyms on your article since it will help the spider to understand your content more.

In our keyword case, ‘natural insomnia treatments’, put several related words like, ‘sleep, insomnia cure, herbal insomnia cures,’ and other similar words. I hope you can get the point by far.

How if we really don’t understand the topic, how can we create content around keywords that we are not familiar with?

While we can outsource our content writing to other people or parties, it is not suggested if you just started. The main reason is, content is not cheap. You will probably have to pay around $5/article with around 500 words, and the quality is not always great. So, if you are just started I suggest you to try to write the article yourself.

If you don’t know the topic or keyword, you can start doing researches online. There are many articles directory you can visit and use to gather all the information you need. Don’t copy their article since it will make your article not unique; instead, use those articles to gather information you can use to start writing your content.

Other way is by using PLR articles. Just like the articles from articles directories, don’t use the PLR as your content. Instead, you can rewrite them on your own words, put synonym, and alike. This way, you can create your content easier and at the same time your content will be unique.

Remember, the purpose of your content is to provide the information needed by your visitors so make sure your article is human readable and make sense. At the same time you will also need to provide the data required by the search engine spider to understand your content topic. So make sure you put your targeted keyword few times on your article along with the related words. In general, put the keywords on article title, first paragraph, last paragraph, and in the middle of your content is enough.

In the next post, we will talk about link building.

How to Spy Your Competition

We have learned how and where to collect your niche idea. If you haven’t read it you can read from this post, How to Find Profitable Niche for Your Website. After collecting your niche idea, do your keyword research, read about it on this post in case you haven’t read it, Keyword Research for Building a Profitable Website.

Now, you have had some niches ideas along with several keywords related to those niches. At this phase, I suggest you to create a kind of niches and keywords list, Ms.Excel will be handy for this purpose. You will need the keywords list to create your website contents, create your articles around those keywords. However, before you start writing the contents, there is one step left, research your competition.

It is very important for us to do competition research since we want to target keywords that are not only profitable and have enough demands, but at the same time it should be “rank-able”. It means we have to be sure that we can get our web site ranked high on search engines for our targeted keywords. And to be able to do it we should analyze our competitors before we decide to target certain keywords.

It is almost impossible for you, especially if you are new and a single fighter webmaster type, to be able to get ranked high on search engine for super competitive keywords like loan, debt, or credit card. You will fight with the big players who have a lot more experiences, skills, tools, and even a team or two to make their website rank for those kind of keywords.

That is why we need to target low competition keywords so we don’t have to fight head to head with those big dogs. Let’s get started.

First, you will need few tools to do this competition research. Don’t worry those tools are free. You need firefox browser and Seoquake plugins. You can download seoquake plugins from this address: http://ff.seoquake.com/. This plugin will give you certain data you will need to spy your competition.

Now go to www.google.com and search for your targeted keywords you have collected before. Use this query: “your keyword”. I know there are many debates whether you should use quote or not around your keywords. However I prefer use quote in this case since it will eliminate ‘non targeting page’ from the results. However I also use non-quote query for comparison purpose.

We will also use other queries to get better data on the keywords, they are inachor:”keywords” and intitle:”keywords” queries. You will need to create a column on your excel keyword list you made before, add those four columns. You’ll need it to store your queries results.

I will use Insomnia Cure for this case study. Please note that the numbers below will change day by day and also depends on your location (data center). If you are in Australia then you will more likely get different figures then people in the US.

At the time I write this post, here is the result I get for keyword (no quote) queries:
keyword

Put the result number 4,650,000 on your keyword (without quote) column.

Now, change the query to “keywords” (with quote). Here is the current result: 68,300. Put the number on your “keyword” column. Next, change the query to inanchor:”keyword”, and the current result is 57,300. Put that number on the appropriate column. Then change the query to intitle:”keyword”, and the current result is 28,400. Put that number on your column.

Do those steps above on all of your keywords on your list. I know it’s time consuming, but you have to do these steps if you want to get better results.

In general, the higher the result numbers usually the harder it is to rank for that keyword. Not always the case, depends on the keyword and the competition too, but it will give you a basic comparison that will be helpful for your research.

Now, let’s start analyze the competition. This is the time where SeoQuake will be really helpful. Look at the data below each result. I cut the image for convenient purpose but you will see similar image if you install seoquake toolbar.
seoquake

The first factor you need to pay attention is their Page Rank (PR), from the image above we can see the PR is 5 . I know some people say that pagerank is useless, not important, and similar. However, it is still give us some rough data about their link popularity since page rank is based on the inbound links. Higher PR means the website/page get more links (quantity and quality applied).

If you see the websites result on Google page 1 are mostly have high PR, more then PR4, then you know that you will have a hard time to beat them. It is not impossible, you just need more works and times, and for some people money as well, to be able to beat them. If the PR of the most websites found on Google page 1 are low, less then PR3, then it will be easier for you to get your website rank on the page 1 google result.

Once again, this is not always be the case, since actually there are a lot of factors used by Google to rank a website on their result page. However, it is still helpful to make a rough estimation about your competition.

The next think you need to look at is their indexed pages. The more pages indexed usually means more authoritative they are. Again, it is just to give us rough estimation, not always be the case.

Next, look at their link popularity. The more links they have usually the harder it is to beat them. I will take more steps on this level. I will also look at the pages/sites that link to your competition.

If you click the Link button on the SeoQuake bar it will open a new window to yahoo search that will give you a list of the pages and sites that give links to that site. In this case I will analyze their pagerank and the topic related factor. If most of the links come from related topic websites, it will be harder to beat. The higher the pagerank of those links, the harder it is to beat.

I will cover link building topic in the future, however, for now, all I can say is, you need to beat your competitors inbound links, in the quality and quantity perspective. Get more inbound links from related pages, get higher pagerank links, and so on.

Now, look at their domain age. Google uses this age factor on their algorithm. The older a domain the harder it is to be beaten on the competition. Click the whois link on your seoquake toolbar for this purpose you can see how old your competitors sites are.

Then you need to look whether it is a single page or a homepage. If it is a homepage, most of the time, it will be a lot harder to compete then if it is a single page since homepages tend to attract and have more links. If it is a homepage, it is also an indication that the website owner dedicated his effort around that keyword. Means, harder to compete.

Next, see their content. In simple words, you need to beat their content, in quality and quantity. Write more and better and longer contents and you’ll be on your way to beat them.

I suggest you to include those factors on your keywords table to give you a complete data about your competition. Yes, it is a hard work, I know.

Now, with the data you have created you can see the rough estimation about your competition on each keyword. I suggest you to try choosing lower competition keywords first, try to get your website rank higher on those low competition keywords before you start to think about higher competing keywords.

Keyword Research for Building a Profitable Website

On the last article How to Find Profitable Niches for Your Website, we have talked about some places and websites where you can start brainstorming for your website topic. By now, I hope you have collected some ideas for your website topic. Whatever the niche ideas you have collected, don’t worry. There is no bad ideas at this level since we will only use it to our next step on building your profitable website, Keyword Research. This is where we will analyze the good and the bad before we decide which niche we want to use for our website.

Keyword research in simple words means, you are doing some researches on any topic ideas you have, to collect certain information needed to analyze what people are looking for, how hard (or easy) is the competition, and how profitable the topic is.

Basically, on this step we will analyze and choose topic and keywords that follow the rules we have talked about before:

  • It should provide what people are looking for. It means the topic and keywords we choose should have demand. There are many good ideas you can choose as your topic, but if no one is searching for them, you will not get any traffic. No traffic means no money can be made. Remember, we are going to build profitable website, not a hobby website.
  • It should be profitable. It means you have to choose topic and keywords that has value and market.
  • It should be rank-able. You should make sure that you can make your website rank high on search engine for the targeted keywords. I will talk about it more detail on the next article.

To help us doing proper keyword research that covers all the factors above, we will use a keyword tool provided by the biggest search engine we target, Google. Google provides us a good free keyword research tool you can access here: https://adwords.google.com/select/KeywordToolExternal

Now, before we continue, I should warn you that there is no keyword tool that can give you the right numbers. I should say that those numbers are just estimation. All of the numbers they give are not accurate. They sometime give you less numbers then the real facts, however most of the time they will give you bigger number. But we still can use them to research our keyword to give you better understanding that keyword A has more demands then keyword B and so on.

Now let’s continue doing our keyword research using Google tool above.

keywordresearch1

When you’re on that page, let’s start doing our keyword research based on your topic list you’ve made before. Choose one topic idea then type it on the box, fill the image verification, then hit the “get keyword ideas” button. In this case I will use “insomnia” as our basic keyword research.

You will get a result showing all the keywords and key phrases related to ‘insomnia’. Now, before we continue, let’s make an adjustment to the tool to get the result we want. This adjustment is not ‘a must’. You can do whatever you want with this tool, as long as you know what you are doing. This is just how I use it, you can follow me and you are good to go.

Look at the up right corner of the keyword result, see the “Match Type” column, it’s a drop down, change it to “exact”. You will see the difference on your keywords result. Now move up a bit on the “Choose columns to display”, it’s a drop down too. Choose “show estimated Avg. CPC”, you will see a new column on your result. Back to the previous drop down, now choose “hide advertise competition”, this column is just for adwords advertisers. Next, choose “hide local search volume” from the drop down. Now the end result will be something like this.

keywordresearch2

On the keywords column you will see various keywords related to ‘insomnia’, you will use this column result as your targeted keywords for your website. The next column, estimated avg. cpc is just a clue how much an advertiser will bid on adwords. There is no hard rule in this level, but basically I will only choose a keyword with at least $1 avg. cpc. Once again, that’s just me.

The next column is an estimation how many times those keywords being searched each month. According to this tool the word ‘insomnia’ is searched 550,000 times each month. There is no hard rule either about it, but usually I only choose a keyword that is searched more then 500 times each month. And at the same time I usually also avoid to choose keywords with huge numbers like the ‘insomnia’ above. At least, I will not target that keyword right away since most of the time the competition for this kind of popular keyword will be too hard, especially for new people.

If you are new on this field, I suggest you to go to keywords with 100-5000 searches per month. You can raise your standard after you are more experienced.

Now, choose your keywords, use the “Add Exact” link on the right side. Your chosen keywords will be stored on the sidebar that you can download after you finish your research.

Now, you have had the keywords you need to start develop your website. What you need to do with those keywords is write an article around each keywords then publish it on your website.

But, before you start creating your articles, let me tell you this. If you follow the step above, you will create a keyword list that covers two criteria from the three I said above. Your keywords have the demands, it means, people are searching for those keywords. And by choosing keywords with at least $1 CPC your keywords are profitable since people do spend money to bid them.

What we haven’t covered yet is the last criteria, your keywords should be rank-able. And yes, it is also important that you only choose keywords that you know and sure you can make it appears high on the google search result. I have told you before that you should avoid super high demand keyword with hundreds of thousands searches like ‘insomnia’ or even million searches like “loan”.

Those keywords definitely have high demands and for sure are super-profitable. However you will have to fight head to head with the smartest marketers around the globe to be able to rank your website for those keywords. I’m not saying it is not possible, however it is not a wise decision to choose those super keywords if you are new.

What you need is keywords with low competition where you are sure that you can make your website rank high on the google result for those keywords. And to be able to do it, you have to spy your competitors first to choose which keywords you should target.

I will tell you on the next article how to do your competition research. Now your task is collect as much topic ideas as you can (I hope you’ve done that by now), then generate keywords list around those topics. We will analyze the competition for those keywords on the next article.

If there’s anything you want to ask, just leave me a comment.

How to Find Profitable Niche for Your Website

On the last article, we have talked about some basic steps how to build profitable website. When I say profitable, I refer to “you can make some money from the website”. To anyone who come to this website for the first time, as you can see at the header, this website is talking about building profitable website where you can earn money from it.

If the idea of make money from your website or blog is offending you, I’m afraid we are not on the same boat. However, if you are someone who are looking for an answer how to make money from your website, then you come at the right place at the right time.

Let’s start the discussion.

From the last article, I touched three basic tips to help you building a website that will earn you money, they’re:

  • Your website should provide what people looking for
  • Your website should rank high on the search engine for its targeted keyword
  • You should have an option or two to monetize it

At the last article, I asked you to decide what topic you want to talk about on your website. Finding the right topic, or some people call it “niche”, is a very crucial step on your effort on building your profitable website. Choosing the wrong niche can result no traffic and no money.

I know several of you don’t know how to find your niche ideas, and where to find it. Don’t worry. In this article, we will go to several websites where we can start our idea brainstorming to collect the right niche for your website.

Google Trends http://www.google.com/trends/hottrends
From this page you can see Google provides 100 topics that are currently hot. This page and topic result is always updated periodically. I usually use this page for gathering ideas only. I will make a note on several hot topics that are ‘possible’ to develop.

Yahoo Buzz http://buzz.yahoo.com/
Just like the Google hot trends, I use this page for ideas generating purpose where I will take a note for some ideas that can be considered as ‘possible’ to develop.

Ebay Pulse http://pulse.ebay.com/
Ebay provides almost anything you can think of since this is the place for the sellers and buyers to meet. From this website you can generate more specific topics, can be based on the ideas you’ve gathered from the websites above.

Amazon
Just like Ebay, Amazon provides almost any products you can think of. This is a very good place to find profitable niches around certain products.

Amazon Market Place http://www.clickbank.com/marketplace.htm
Clickbank is an affiliate network site where you can find thousands of digital products you can promote. Most of their products are information product, a very good place to start your topic generating around certain topics, and at the same time you can prepare your monetizing method for your website.

You can also use other affiliate network websites to find profitable niches. You can browse the marketplace on certain affiliate websites like commission junction, linkshare, shareasale to start brainstorming your ideas. Probably you have to join them first before you can start browse their entire marketplace.

From those websites above, you can collect many topic ideas for your website. I suggest you to gather as many topics as possible. Put it on a note, table, or whatever you like. You will use it as your reference for our next step, keyword research. I will talk about this on the next article.

Actually you can also find your niche ideas from anything you see on your real life. Look at your desk, look at your room. When watching television look at what they advertise. When you are driving look at those big billboard. They advertise over there for a reason. People buy the products, whatever it is. It means, there is a demand for it.

Now, your task is go and collect as much niche ideas as you can. Make a note on them, we will use it on our next article, keyword research.

The Basic of Building a Profitable Website

OK, so far we have learn how to build your website for free. On another article, we have also learn how to make a wordpress blog. I have outlined several point regarding the advantages of using wordpress as you website core. While there are many other website builders and CMS you can use to build your website, I will probably put more focus on building your website using wordpress in the future. Mostly since it is free and it is very user-friendly, and at the same time it can be a powerful vehicle to get high rank on the search engine search result. I will probably touch a little about other website builders and CMS but most of the time I will focus on wordpress.

Now, after you have learn and (hopefully) practiced how to make a wordpress blog for your website, let’s move into a more advanced discussion, how to make a profitable website. Building a website is easy, especially using wordpress, you can build it under 10 minutes after you have some experiences and practices. However, building the website is only the first step on our journey on having a profitable website that will earn us some money from it. There are several other factors that we should prepare and have to make it happen.

Before you get me wrong for putting this article after the last two, I should say that the last articles purpose is just to give you a kind of warming up, and at the same time teaching any of you who never built a website before. Of course, I will not talking about make money online from website to anyone who never built a site before, right? But now, since you have learn how to do that, let’s step to the basic of making a profitable website.

To be able to make your website popular and at the same time making you money from it, you have to understand several factors as follows:

  • Your website should provide what people looking for
  • Your website should rank high on the search engine for its targeted keyword
  • You should have an option or two to monetize it

I know several of you don’t know anything about those 3, don’t worry, I will explain them for you.

Your website should provide what people are looking for

There are millions of people around the world online everyday with their own purpose. Most of them are searching for specific answer to their problem. Some of them probably looking for an answer how to build a website while others are looking a way to cure their acne problem.

Now, that is your task as a website owner to provide those answers. Of course you don’t have to provide all information people needs, you will get a better result if you narrow your website topic, let’s say you provide information to people who are looking for a solution to cure their hair loss problem.

This website is focus on providing information to people who are looking for a way to build a website. At the same time, this website will also provide an answer to people who want to learn how to make profitable website, how to get more visitors to their website, how to earn money from their site, and so on.

Now, decide what topic you want to target from your website.

Your website should rank high on the search engine for its targeted keyword

So you have built your website talking about certain topic, let’s say it is “how to make money online from a blog”. You have several articles written and published on your website but there is no one visiting your website. What happen? What ingredients you are missing?

The answer is simple, your website cannot be found anywhere on search engine. When people type “how to make money online from a blog” on Google’s search box, they can’t find your website at the first pages. No matter how good your contents are, if the visitors can’t find it on the first pages of search engine result, you will not get any visitors.

Now, your task is make sure that your website is listed on Google first page when people searching for “how to make money online from a blog”. To be able to do it, you have to learn about search engine optimization or used to call as SEO.

Don’t worry if you know nothing about SEO, we will learn about it in the near future. For now just absorb and understand this fact first.

You should have an option or two to monetize it

There are many options you can take to be able to monetize your website. Most popular ways are:
- affiliate programs
- google adsense
- direct advertising
- link selling

I will talk about them later don’t worry. I just want to remind you that before you decide choosing your website topic and write contents around that topic you have a clear picture how you want to monetize it.

There are several points you have to understand before you start building your website, especially if you want to make a profitable website where you can earn some money from it. This article is just touching the basic understanding. I will talk more about them in the next articles. However, if you have any questions, feel free to leave it on the comment.

How to Build a Wordpress Blog

I keep arguing myself whether I need to write this wordpress installation tutorial or not since there are many websites and ebooks available talking about this topic. If you are a little more experienced then I believe you don’t need this information. I will only cover the most basic steps on this tutorial since it is for new inexperienced people. In the future, I will write more advanced tutorial on setting your wordpress blog to make your blog more powerful, and at the same time properly optimized for the search engine to get more visitors.

On my last post how to build web site free I have told you about few free web hosting services that will allow you to install wordpress blog on your site. While the installation process will be varies on each hosting depends on the control panel they used, I will use cPanel as an example here since it is one of the most used control panels around.

To access your cpanel go to yourdomain.com/cpanel. You will need to provide your hosting username and password. You will then redirected to your cpanel main page.

To install your wordpress blog, scroll down the page and find a link/icon called “Fantastico”. Click the link/icon and you will be redirected to a new page. Click the “wordpress” link from the left menu. You will go to a new page, select “new installation” link. Fill the required boxes.

You can install the blog on your main domain or on the sub directory. If you want to install the blog on your main domain then leave the “install in directory” box blank. If you want to install the blog on the directory, just type the directory name on the box and your new blog will be installed on that directory.

Click the Install Wordpress button.

Your new wordpress blog is now ready. To start blogging you need to access your blog admin panel at yourblog.com/wp-admin, type your admin user name and password, then you will be redirected to your admin dashboard where you can write a new post, create new categories, place links, and many more setting. I suggest you to play around on this level for a while to familiarize yourself with all the features available.

To change your blog design you can do it easily. First you need a wordpress theme, go to google and search for “free wordpress template” and you will find thousands of free wordpress design you can use. Download the theme you like, then you need to upload it on your blog hosting. You need to upload the theme on /public_html/wp-content/themes directory. Go back to your blog admin panel, click the Appearance link, and select the theme you have just uploaded. You have a new look blog now.

You can also use several plugins to make your wordpress more advanced. There are thousands of free wordpress plugins with their own purpose. To install the plugins, upload them on /public_html/wp-content/plugins folder. Go to your blog admin dashboard, click the plugins link then activate them.

To upload those files, you will need a FTP program. I will not write a tutorial about FTP since you can easily find this information online easily.

If you follow my last post regarding free blogging on wordpress.com I’m sure you will not face any problems using this blog system since most of the features are similar. If you’re really new and know nothing about wordpress I suggest you to read and follow my previous post.

I will stop this basic wordpress installation tutorial at this point. If you have any questions feel free to leave it on the comment. I will probably write another wordpress tutorial in the future to make your blog more powerful, useful, beautiful, and at the same time properly optimized for the search engine to get more visitors to your blog.

OK, as a closing words, why I even bother to write a long post explaining the steps to install a wordpress blog? What is so special with wordpress?

While I can write another long post explaining the details advantages of using wordpress for your site, there are several points I can highlight here:

  • Search engines, especially the biggest one – Google, love wordpress blogs due too some reasons.
  • It’s free. You don’t need to spend money to use it.
  • It is very easy to install and use, anyone can do it with little practices and directions.
  • It’s a lot faster to build a complete websites.
  • It is supported by thousands of people where you can easily get many beautiful themes and powerful plugins for free.

I should add here that after I use wordpress I never built a website using any other website builder.

Build a Website Free Ways

When it come to build a website we always have two options regarding the price, the free way or paid way. While generally, and personally, I always suggest my readers to choose the paid way due to many advantages it has, and also many disadvantages of the free method, I should say that for the first timers, building your website using the free method is probably the best step to learn the basics without any need to spend any money. After understanding the basic steps, it is suggested to move to the paid one to get the most advantages of their own website.

Remember, the purpose of this blog is to provide information how to make profitable website. While you still can make money from free website, you should know that using free website or free hosting will limit your self since you can’t do many things that can be done if you are using paid website/hosting.

With that in mind, let’s start talking about building your website for free to learn the very basic steps before you move forward on your journey to make a profitable website.

There are many free website or free hosting services available on the internet. When I started learning these website building things, I used geocities and tripod to host my sites. As an exchange, I have to let them place some banners and ads on all of my pages. That is the common practice at that time, actually still applied until now, you can get a free hosting where you can put your website online for free, and as an exchange the free hosting company will place an ads or two on all of your websites and pages.

Then, a friend of mine introduced me with the blog things. I started my blogging journey using free blog from blogspot.com. Using this free blog hosting service, all you need to do is simply register a free account with them and you can start your own blog in no time. There will be no banner ads placed on your blog, even you can place your own ads on that blog. The navigation system is quite easy that I’m sure you can start your blogspot blog easily. Register using a gmail email to make it easier for you.

After using blogspot for sometimes, I was introduced with wordpress. To learn about this blog system, I joined wordpress.com where I can create my wordpress blog for free. Just like the blogspot, all you need to do is just register an account for free and you can start your wordpress blog right away. I should say that wordpress is quite different compared to blogspot and probably you will need sometimes to really learn and understand all of their features. However, after you really understand all of wordpress features, you will see that it is really fun blogging using wordpress.

If you never made a blog before, I really suggest you to register and make a blog at wordpress.com to learn more about their features. It will be really helpful for you in the future. I should probably tell you here, that most of my websites now are based on wordpress blog, and probably the information you’ll find here mostly will also be based on this wordpress blogging system. So, if you don’t know about it yet, simply go to the website, register a free account, and start build your first wordpress blog.

The two free methods above are based on free blogging system, and since I don’t want to make an impression that you only can make free blog, I will give you a direction where you can get your free web host to host your website.

If you have built your website offline using frontpage, dreamweaver, or any other website builders, then you will need a host service to host the website. If in the beginning of this article I mentioned geocities and tripod, actually there are many free hosting services available on the net. Some of them even don’t place any ads on your website and pages. You can use google to find them or simply go to these two websites below to find the free hosting services, they are: freewebhostingtalk.com and freewebspace.net. There are many other website providing information about free hosting but I’m sure the two above is enough.

The good news is, most of the current free hosting services also provide you several installer scripts where you can easily install your blog. Most of the time you can install a wordpress blog, this will be a good way for you to learn more about wordpress blogging. If you find your free hosting provider provides a wordpress installer, make sure you use it. Install a wordpress blog to really learn and understand this blogging engine that you can’t find from the free one you get from wordpress.com.

I will give you one free hosting service where you can install a wordpress blog on it. Visit www.freehostia.com register an account for free then you can start building your wordpress blog for free.
