How to Build a Wordpress Blog
I keep arguing myself whether I need to write this wordpress installation tutorial or not since there are many websites and ebooks available talking about this topic. If you are a little more experienced then I believe you don’t need this information. I will only cover the most basic steps on this tutorial since it is for new inexperienced people. In the future, I will write more advanced tutorial on setting your wordpress blog to make your blog more powerful, and at the same time properly optimized for the search engine to get more visitors.
On my last post how to build web site free I have told you about few free web hosting services that will allow you to install wordpress blog on your site. While the installation process will be varies on each hosting depends on the control panel they used, I will use cPanel as an example here since it is one of the most used control panels around.
To access your cpanel go to yourdomain.com/cpanel. You will need to provide your hosting username and password. You will then redirected to your cpanel main page.
To install your wordpress blog, scroll down the page and find a link/icon called “Fantastico”. Click the link/icon and you will be redirected to a new page. Click the “wordpress” link from the left menu. You will go to a new page, select “new installation” link. Fill the required boxes.
You can install the blog on your main domain or on the sub directory. If you want to install the blog on your main domain then leave the “install in directory” box blank. If you want to install the blog on the directory, just type the directory name on the box and your new blog will be installed on that directory.
Click the Install Wordpress button.
Your new wordpress blog is now ready. To start blogging you need to access your blog admin panel at yourblog.com/wp-admin, type your admin user name and password, then you will be redirected to your admin dashboard where you can write a new post, create new categories, place links, and many more setting. I suggest you to play around on this level for a while to familiarize yourself with all the features available.
To change your blog design you can do it easily. First you need a wordpress theme, go to google and search for “free wordpress template” and you will find thousands of free wordpress design you can use. Download the theme you like, then you need to upload it on your blog hosting. You need to upload the theme on /public_html/wp-content/themes directory. Go back to your blog admin panel, click the Appearance link, and select the theme you have just uploaded. You have a new look blog now.
You can also use several plugins to make your wordpress more advanced. There are thousands of free wordpress plugins with their own purpose. To install the plugins, upload them on /public_html/wp-content/plugins folder. Go to your blog admin dashboard, click the plugins link then activate them.
To upload those files, you will need a FTP program. I will not write a tutorial about FTP since you can easily find this information online easily.
If you follow my last post regarding free blogging on wordpress.com I’m sure you will not face any problems using this blog system since most of the features are similar. If you’re really new and know nothing about wordpress I suggest you to read and follow my previous post.
I will stop this basic wordpress installation tutorial at this point. If you have any questions feel free to leave it on the comment. I will probably write another wordpress tutorial in the future to make your blog more powerful, useful, beautiful, and at the same time properly optimized for the search engine to get more visitors to your blog.
